The cannabis world in 2024 looks very different to the world in which Paradise Seeds was born in 1994; the world is flooded with new weed strains and new cannabis celebrities, cultivation knowledge has proliferated and legalization continues its march across the globe!
This article takes a look at where The Paradise story began and highlights two new strains released in March as part of the seed bank’s 30th birthday celebrations.
How the Paradise Seeds story began….
Paradise owner and master breeder Luc Krol started experimenting with cannabis breeding when he moved to Amsterdam in the early 1990s. At the time, Amsterdam cannabis culture revolved around the legendary coffeeshop scene.
It was here where Luc swapped seeds with cannabis travellers returning from land race and from the Hindu Kush, Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and underground breeding hotspots in the USA.
One coffeeshop in particular, Lucky Mothers, was a popular meeting spot for cannabis travelers. To help fund his breeding habit, Luc sold some of the weed he grew. “I called it Mother’s Milk and it was a huge hit,” he remembers. “That was when I realised that I might have something!”
By 1994 Luc had a collection of strains he’d created, but disaster struck when his growing operation was busted by the police. Luckily however, the lawyer for his defence, recommended that he set up legitimately as a cannabis seed company, which was legal under Dutch law. Paradise Seeds was born!
Luc launched with five official varieties, which included Dutch Dragon and a frosty, potent indica which would become famous around the world! That strain was Sensi Star, which won the High Times Cup in 1999.
Fast forward to 2024…
Three decades on and the Paradise collection is still going strong! This brings us to Blue Gem and Highway 66, the latest strains to feature in the extensive Paradise Seeds library containing 50+ strains.
Luc says, “For our last few strains we have really been focusing on getting the best out of a combination of USA and Dutch genetics. Growers can expect these two to perform really well both indoor and outdoor!”
New Paradise Strains for 2024: Highway 66 and Blue Gem
Highway 66 is a cross between one of Paradise’s biggest strains in recent years, the power sativa, L.A. Amnesia and Gelato. The Californian Gelato genetics bring fine tuning to this resinous plant. For terpene connoisseurs, an exceptionally high Terpinolene percentage will be a big incentive, alongside enhanced Limonene, Trans-ocimene and Alpha Humulene in the profile.
Blue Gem enhances the popular Blueberry strain, adding to its versatility and great resistance qualities, with even more flavor and potency thanks to the Gelato element. A compact plant in the grow room it’s also a resilient outdoor plant. Its statistics are impressive too: for example 1% CBG content, and a flavor profile rich in Beta Caryophelene, Limonene, Guaiol, Alpha Humulene, Beta Myrcene.
Paradise Seeds have a few surprises up their sleeves for this birthday year and readers should keep an eye on the website for latest news and promotions.
